How to Grow Kitchen Herbs on a Balcony

دقيقتين

Green herb pots on a bright balcony

Three small pots can add fresh flavour and a good smell to a balcony. Success is less about space than light, drainage and watering based on the soil rather than a rigid calendar. Start with herbs you will actually use.

Choose herbs for your light

Basil, thyme and rosemary enjoy strong light. Mint tolerates gentler light but spreads quickly. Watch the balcony for a full day before buying: the hours of sun matter more than the compass direction alone because nearby buildings can change it.

Drainage matters more than decoration

Choose a pot with holes and empty the saucer after watering. A very large pot stays wet for too long, while a tiny one dries quickly. Use potting mix rather than heavy garden soil, and leave a little room at the top so water does not spill over.

Water after checking

Push a finger about two centimetres into the soil. If it is dry, water slowly until a little drains out, then empty the saucer. Heat and wind change drying speed, so a fixed calendar is unreliable. Yellow leaves with wet soil often mean too much water, not too little.

Harvest lightly and often

  • Pinch basil above a pair of leaves so it branches out.
  • Do not remove more than a third of the plant at once.
  • Use herbs soon after cutting or store them appropriately.

Watch pests and heat

Check the underside of leaves weekly. Rinse a small number of insects with a gentle spray and isolate the pot if needed. During a heat wave, afternoon shade and morning watering may help. Protect containers from strong wind so they do not dry out or fall.

Bottom line: Begin with two or three pots, learn how your balcony behaves, and expand only when care feels easy.
