We usually look for an artist’s signature in a painting’s corner. In this story, giving everyone a signature might require a second canvas just for the names.
14,024 contributions to one artwork
Guinness reports that 14,024 people joined a paint-by-numbers project at London and Whipsnade zoos in May 2026. Celebrating ZSL’s 200th anniversary, it earned a record for contributions to a painting by numbers across multiple venues. The report appeared on 16 June; this is not an event that happened today.
The number is fun. The idea is better.
What Dajran likes is not simply the enormous headcount. A small space and an assigned colour offer an approachable starting point. You do not have to be an accomplished artist to contribute, and there is no blank canvas asking the uncomfortable question: “Well, what now?”
We often treat art as something to admire from a distance. This idea reverses that relationship. Your part can be small without being unnecessary. The pleasure is seeing your contribution beside work by people you have never met.
Try the principle—not the record attempt
For a modest group activity, choose a simple drawing, divide it into numbered spaces and keep the palette limited. Give each participant an identifiable area, then assemble the result. These are Dajran’s suggestions, not a description of how the zoo organisers ran their event.
A perfect finish should not be the admission requirement. An imperfect section may be precisely what reminds someone: “I helped make that.” Participation is a more interesting goal than making every brushstroke identical.
