“Less than a million years old” does not sound youthful in human conversation. In astronomy, however, it can mean that we have practically walked into the nursery.

A planet still under construction

On 16 September 2026, NASA announced confirmation of Elias 2-24 b, describing it as the youngest known planet, less than a million years old. Its star lies around 450 light-years away, and the planet is still forming within a disk of gas and dust. Read NASA’s announcement and Keck Observatory’s account.

Think of arriving at an unfinished house: materials everywhere, work continuing, and the final shape still taking form. That is an analogy for this early stage, not a literal description of what surrounds the star.

The surprise was hiding in the archive

Researchers used Keck observations from 2018 and 2020 to compare the bright point’s movement over time, supporting its identification as a planet rather than an imaging defect or a background star.

This is our favourite part: discovery does not always require looking somewhere new. Sometimes the important move is returning to something already observed with a sharper question and a better comparison. An archive is not necessarily where a story ends; it can be where the next one starts.

Why a young world matters

Studying such an early stage helps researchers test ideas about how planets form. Instead of examining the finished result and reconstructing every step, they have a chance to observe part of the process itself.

Scientific curiosity is not a future holiday itinerary, though. This announcement does not establish life or habitability, nor does it provide a detailed photograph of the planet’s surface.

The takeaway: The exciting part is not finding another home. It is seeing a world near the beginning of its story. Even planets have a “work in progress” phase.
